P&G is a leader in animal welfare.
We care deeply about the health and well-being of animals.
For our Pet Care business:
• We restrict the types of studies we conduct to only those acceptable to human volunteers.
This means no invasive or terminal studies are permitted.
• Our feeding studies are limited to three locations: pet owners’ homes, places where dogs
and cats already live (such as Service Dog organizations) or our own state of the art Pet
Health and Nutrition Center.
• More than 70 percent of the dogs and cats in Iams feeding studies are family pets living
in private homes.
• Our animals are adopted into loving homes when their career with us is over. There is a
waiting list for our dogs and cats.
For our other P&G business, our research policy is clear and simple:
• We are required to evaluate all our products for safety before they are sold. However, we
do not test any product or ingredient on animals unless required by law.
• Any animal study must meet the highest animal welfare and ethical standards by passing
a formal clearance process within P&G, requiring a review by a special committee of
scientists, veterinarians, and community representatives.
• We are a leader in developing non-animal alternative tests. We’ve invested $265 million
in this important work and developed more than 50 alternative methods, which are now
used broadly. We will continue to develop alternatives until the need for animal testing
has been eliminated.
P&G Studies Involving Animals: Did You Know?
1. P&G believes that ending animal testing will be a benefit for all. P&G is committed to the
elimination of all animal testing.
2. P&G will not test products on animals unless required by law.
3. P&G does not test any cosmetic products on animals.
4. More than 99.5% of P&G safety evaluations are done without animal testing.
5. P&G is leading the way to eliminate animal testing.
• As a company, P&G has invested more than $265 million to develop more than 50 proven
alternative methods. We’ve shared our alternatives in more than 400 scientific publications
as well as through presentations and meetings so others can benefit from our advances.
• P&G has won numerous awards for its work in eliminating testing with animals, including:
the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Alternatives to Animal
Testing awarded by The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, the Russell
and Burch Award in 1999 presented by the HSUS, and most recently the Institute for In-Vitro
Science recognized our contributions to the development of animal testing alternatives.
• P&G, leading a consortium of like-minded companies, successfully negotiated with the EPA
to accept data from some non-animal tests for registration of anti-bacterial cleaning products.
6. Many government regulatory authorities still consider animal tests to be the most appropriate way
to determine the safety and effectiveness of many products before human exposure.
• In the U.S., anti-bacterial products require testing under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide,
and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Other product categories in other regions have requirements
for testing with animals as a condition for registering the product for sale in that country.
For instance, in Canada, testing with animals is required for registration of new chemicals
on the Domestic Substances list.
• Animal testing is also required for compliance with clean water regulations to assess the
toxicity of waste-water effluent from manufacturing plants. Testing with fish is a requirement
to obtain and renew plant discharge permits that span all consumer products. The United
States EPA, Canada EPA, the European Union and most Asian countries require testing.
• Our safety evaluations provide critical information to educate physicians, medical staff, and
veterinarians so that they can provide the best emergency room care for adults, children, or
pets in cases of accidental poisoning.
P&G has made tremendous strides in eliminating animal testing. We are proud of the progress
we have made to date and we promise to continue working on these efforts in the future.
Ending animal testing will benefit all.
