FACTS FOR THE RECORD
by Howard M. Hadley
The Staffordshire Terrier Cub of America was organized at the Morris & Essex Show, May 23, 1936, as the 1936 National Parent Club for the Staffordshire Terrier. A Standard was adopted at this meeting and approved by the Board of Directors of the American Kennel Club, June 10, 1936. This Standard is almost as compiled by Will Judy, Editor of Dog World, for the Yankee Terrier. A resolution was adopted by the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America making Mr. Judy a life member and Honorary Vice President, in recognition of his years of effort in promoting the interests of the (Yankee) Staffordshire Terrier. It is well to note here that the Standard for the American (Pit) Bull Terrier, as approved by the United Kennel Club, 1936, describes accurately the TRUE Staffordshire of today. The principal difference between Standards being color with the UKC listing any color or marking permissible. New Fanciers should know the truth - and that is: ONLY THE NAME OF THE DOG WAS CHANGED - from American (Pit) Bull Terrier or Yankee Terrier, to Staffordshire Terrier.
First registrations under the name Staffordshire Terrier are found in the Stud Book for August 1936. The AKC ordinarily requires both the sire and dam of the litter or individual dog to be registered before their get can be registered. When the Stud Book was opened to our breed, some concessions had to be made and some means of verifying correctness of breeding, as shown on applications for registration, had to be found. The AKC agreed to consider applications if they were first approved by a committee from the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America. UKC pedigrees covering 3 generations were included with each application and if certified by the Club President, they were accepted by the AKC. It is a requirement of the AKC that to register an individual dog, the litter of which he was one must first be registered. Here the breeder's signature had to be obtained and often caused great difficulty and much correspondence. Beginning in January 1942, the AKC granted special registration privileges. Any Staffordshire could be registered regardless of age without first registering the litter. Breeders and fanciers were notified that applications should be cleared before June 30, 1942. This closing date was extended from time to time, but a few years ago the AKC Stud Book was finally closed to new registrations where sire and dam were not registered. Unfortunately, far too many of the old-time breeders refused to register their stock, the main reason being dislike of the name "Staffordshire".
Here are ALL AKC Staffordshire Terrier registrations from June 10, 1936 through 1957 - ranking in order of registration and total registered each year... It should be noted that the rank which each breed holds is not necessarily a true index of popularity. In some breeds (Staffordshires) the number of unregistered dogs is very high.
